LaPorte YMCA 10K/5K Run

With plentiful sunshine to offset the cold temperature, the fifth annual LaPorte YMCA Run was held Saturday, May 29, at Soldiers Memorial Park. The event included a 10K competitive run and a 5K fun run/walk.

John Polomchak of Fair Oaks, Ind., captured the 10K run with a time of 36 minutes, 3 seconds. Richard Gutierrez (36:27) of East Chicago, Ind., was second and Masters winner Jeff Mescal (36:30) of Hebron, Ind., crossed third.

Karen Nagel (38:49) of Chesterton, Ind., was the top female finisher and placed fourth overall. The women’s Masters winner was Christine Byers (47:14) of Valparaiso, Ind.

The top junior finisher in the 5K run was 12-year-old Brittany Stepp (24:03) of Wheatfield, Ind. The first junior male to finish was Gavin Gresham (26:45), a 10-year-old from Michigan City, Ind.

In the 10K run, 102 runners crossed the finish line, while another 70 completed the 5K fun run/walk.

The presenting sponsors of this year’s LaPorte YMCA Run were LaPorte Kiwanis Club, LaPorte Regional Health System and Wells Fargo Bank. Proceeds from this event help fund the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.
